Dauvit Broun (Glasgow) – “Scottish independence and British identity: a medieval perspective”

In today’s discourse Scottish independence is typically seen as incompatible with British identity. In the late Middle Ages Scotland’s sovereignty was celebrated in histories written in Latin, most notably by Fordun and Bower. It seems surprising, therefore, to find statements in Fordun and Bower’s works where the Scottish kingdom is seen in overtly British terms.…
